“Acoustical Planning in Auditoria” was the title of a six-day seminar from July 22nd to 27th 2006 in Sheraton Cairo Hotel in the Egyptian capital.  The event was organized by Acoustic Design Ahnert Limited, and was divided into three parts, two days each.  The first part addressed the fundamentals of acoustics in auditoria, the second part handled modeling of rooms in the acoustical simulator EASE, while the advanced topics of ray tracing and auralization were dealt with in the third part.

The event was attended by 12 participants from different countries including India, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa in addition to Egypt.

Emad El-Saghir provided over the first two days a concise presentation of the key concepts  of planning auditoria from the standpoint of architectural acoustics and electroacoustics.  He explained the major differences between the auditoria intended for speech, for music or those intended for multipurpose use, as far as acoustics and electroacoustics are concerned.

Karen Irmscher demonstrated over the next two days the different approaches for efficient, accurate and quick model building in EASE.  Real-world examples were worked out during the sessions on the participants’ notebooks, which all had a full version of the program installed.

On the last two days, both instructors have explained the theory underlying the ray-tracing methods of simulation as well as the auralization techniques with further examples worked out by the participants, and with auditoria in mind.

Very high level of organization, great job, excellent coverage of topics and a friendly environment
